How can materials assist in closing the loop?
G . F Smith paper company invited us to takeover part of their Show Space in Central London to celebrate the launch of their newly developed paper Extract. We designed and curated an exhibition of materials that are all closing the loop that featured work by Jorge Penadés, Malai, Marie Bach Holm, Sophie Rowley, Studio Furthermore and Studio ilio.
Extract is a pioneering paper which is made from post-consumer paper coffee cups. About 7 million paper cups are used on a daily basis in the UK and only 1 in 400 of those are recycled. Every sheet of 380gsm Extract paper uses at least 5 post-consumer coffee cups.
Not only were we invited to curate a display of closed-loop materials, following the narrative of Extract's creation, G . F Smith also gave us the opportunity to create our very own Make Book using Extract as the endpapers. Our Make Book communicates the values behind Ma-tt-er, which are also aligned with vision and purpose that instigated the development and use of Extract.
This exhibition was on for a 3 month period during Spring 2018 at the G . F Smith Show Space and we had an abundance of visitors coming to explore and discover some of the materials and material designers making a positive impact.
