Aesthetica Future Now Symposium

Ma-tt-er was invited to ask ‘What does it means to live in a material world?’ at Aesthetica’s ‘The Future Now Symposium’. Materials can often be used for aesthetic pleasure within art and design and without consideration of what is ethically and responsibly sound. It is fundamental for both artists and designers working today to reassess how and what they make with, using materials to our advantage is no longer for the individual but for the many. We discussed why materials matter. With this scope we queried how sustainable solutions can be offered through exploring the earth’s elements, what the rise of scientific developments could mean for art and design and how looking at methods of making in the past can assist us in the present.
