What does sustainability mean to you?

DAZED asked us to make a film about sustainability as part of the Material World Campaign for Selfridges during London Fashion Week 2017. After an optimistic consideration of unexpected and underused materials we decided to make a film about mushrooms.

Fungi are an abundant resource that happen to grow in most landscapes and support our survival with that of the natural world. Historical, culturally specific and recent applications of fungi as material led us to illustrate the considerable amount of potential they hold.

With the help of mother nature and emerging technologies fungi are being transformed into one of the most versatile materials creating fashion, footwear, bricks, furniture, packaging, biofuels and even antibiotics.

Our approach to the film was optimism. Materials have huge potential in providing the answers to our planets problems. Fungi as a singular ingredient with myriad applications enabled us to open up the discussion surrounding its possibilities alongside those of our wider material landscape.
